A WORD ABOUT THE
BAHÁ'Í SERVICE FOR THE BLIND
The Bahá'í Service for the Blind was established over sixty years ago and is a committee of the National Spiritual Assembly of the United States. Its purpose is to provide the literature of the Faith in mediums which can be used by those individuals whose physical or mental handicaps prevent them from using normal print. To this end the Service for the Blind produces materials in Braille, large print and recordings on cassette tape.
The work for the Service is all done by volunteers many of whom work at full time jobs. There is no paid staff. The work of the Service would be impossible if it were not for these volunteers. See the section "Service Opportunities" if you would like to help.
Copies of books are produced on a per order basis. A lack of storage space and money prevents us from maintaining an inventory of books from which to fill orders. We try to fill orders as quickly as possible but you should allow for 4 -6 weeks time to receive your order.
The cost of these special materials can often be quite high, especially in Braille, when compared to the print editions. The prices charged by the Service are kept as low as possible with no attempt to produce a profit. Also for the benefit of those needing our service we maintain a lending library of materials in Braille and on cassette tape.
Note that when ordering Braille items for another individual, please be sure that the person does read Braille. Most blind persons do not read Braille. Also, please note that our materials such as our cassette tapes are available ONLY to the visually impaired or to those whose handicap prevents them from using normal printed material. These tapes are produced in a special format which cannot be played on a standard tape player.
